I made her clothes until I went to work when she started 1st grade. I can tell you that in all my years of sewing I have never liked Simplicity patterns. When I look in my stash of patterns I have saved after purging there are VERY FEW Simplicity and most are McCalls, Vogue or from independent companies. However, the independent pattern world has stepped up to teach new sewers (although the quality can vary there as well). The Made by Rae Geranium dress is well done and has a fully lined bodice.mjbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07270657379178402124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588118538433483895.post-49346302463250685782020-02-02T10:58:40.972-05:002020-02-02T10:58:40.972-05:00in the late 60s, I spent a couple of years in a fa...in the late 60s, I spent a couple of years in a fashion design program, learning pattern drafting, garment design and tailoring. Recently I thought I’d take a break from art quilts and make myself some garments, but found commercial patterns so disappointing that I have decided to make my own. If I had a daughter who was interested, I would be so happy to pass on these skills, and I can’t tell you how many times my advanced garment making skills have come to my aid in making complex art out of cloth! I’m with you, on this.
Suehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07064704260223262652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588118538433483895.post-23748858406772539722020-02-01T22:30:06.745-05:002020-02-01T22:30:06.745-05:00Do not succumb to letting this go! Otherwise, if she continues to dabble in sewing clothes for the little one, she's just going to become frustrated, and just like in quilting, think it's her fault (as has already happened). And you will continue to stew about this, I'm sure. All this strikes me as lazy rather than time-saving and probably the result of home economics classes being discontinued in so many schools. I really get impatient with poor instructions, knowing that if I, a seasoned sewer, gets confused, the uninitiated will be totally lost. The Idaho Beautyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09979439849662755082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588118538433483895.post-83563172275574654912020-02-01T22:07:36.498-05:002020-02-01T22:07:36.498-05:00I agree with you on the sloppy pattern directions ...I agree with you on the sloppy pattern directions and their way of finishing! Particularly anything to do with curves - new stitchers really need to understand curves and bias edges, but it seems to me that they need to go and find about these online, rather than in the patterns themselves.

I've returned to garment making, but for costumes for our local panto. As the intent of these is to be viewed from a distance, some of these "quick" (sloppy?) construction techniques have been adequate.
