Cinderella wins again
I've written before about what I call my Cinderella quilt, the one that got rejected from Quilt National three years ago, then never even made it out in public for more than a year. I was so proud of this quilt, but for a while I thought it would never get off my stair railing. Finally in late 2013 it was accepted into a show sponsored by Surface Design Association and won best in show. I felt vindicated.
Crazed 16: Suburban Dream
It's getting too old for any of the big quilt shows but it has been out and about a few times in small shows, and last month was selected for the 22nd Annual Juried Art Exhibit at the Jasper Arts Center in Jasper IN. The show opened last week, and Cinderella is once again best in show!
The best thing about this award is that it's not a fiber show but an all-mediums show. Much as it's delightful to do well in a fiber show, it's even better to beat out the paintings, the sculptures, the photographs. These precious moments give me hope that fiber can actually have a presence in the Big Art World!
And if you find yourself driving through southwestern Indiana, make a little detour to Jasper and check out the show. It runs through September 28.
The quilt looks beautiful. Any chance of your showing us some detail?

Sure -- I updated the post.
DeleteCongratulations! Especially on the multi-medium show.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteThis is also a good lesson in remembering that an artwork's fit with others, not its appeal/workmanship/quality often determines its acceptance in a show.
Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteAh... fibre in the Big Wide Art World ... now there is a thought! And congratulations on the acclaim.
ReplyDeleteWell! it's about time that Cinderella got her prince. er-um Prize. And to beat out other mediums is icing on the cake. How wonderful. Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I just wanted to tell you that after 4 years of dragging my feet, I actually sat down a few days ago and worked through your skinny lines tutorial, step by step, and was thoroughly inspired by your technique. Thank you for your generosity. Your blog and your art is always an inspiration to me.
Thank you all for your very kind words. Cinderella and I appreciate them!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful! I am very glad for you. It is worth it.

Congratulations to you and Cinderella. I'd say that is vindication--in spades!
ReplyDeleteI just want to say how inspiring and encouraging it is that this piece of art more than held its own in an all media show. I hope more fiber artists will enter ART shows, not just art quilt shows!
