Sneak peek 3

Here's another sneak peek at my new book, "Pattern-Free Quilts: Riffs on the Rail Fence Block," just published last month.

The book has a gallery of 26 quilts, most made by me, but some made by other artists whose names you will recognize.  At first glance, you might not think that they're based on the rail fence block, but that's explained.  Here's a quilt by Melinda Snyder:

I see each of the horizontal rows as a single rail fence block; for instance, the bottom row/block has 12 rails.  It might seem like a stretch to call that a "block," but that's exactly what I'm trying to do in the book -- to stretch the imagination and explore what you can get out of a very simple basic concept.

To buy the book, click on the thumbnail picture in the sidebar at right, or HERE.

  1. Thanks for this. I was going to email and ask you to share a bit more. Strongly considering buying your book. I use the library a lot, also buy used books. So not much of my budget goes to new books! Also I wondered if there is a reason it appears in CreateSpace and not on Amazon-proper. Thanks. Feel free to email if you prefer to answer that way. catbirdquilts@gmail.com

    1. Melanie -- I was asked this last week -- the book is self-published, and my editor/publisher and I decided not to list it on Amazon. We get more money this way, and we're hoping we can build enough momentum through our own marketing efforts to sell a bunch of books at a fair price, compared to (maybe) more books but at a deeply discounted price. Amazon (which owns CreateSpace) gets their money either way, but this way we get some too.

  2. Got the book and had to read it cover to cover right away.
It was informative and I will use this. I am not a pattern person so I like the free approach.

  3. Stunning example of a non-conforming "block".

  4. Got the book, and am really enjoying it. Took it to my quilt group last week. Several of them noted your blog and said they planned to order it. I'll take it to a workshop with a bunch more quilters this weekend, and to a workshop with Gwen Marston in October. I might use the pink and red L quilt as an inspiration for one of my own.

    1. Mieke -- we're trying an experiment -- I ordered a copy of the book to be sent to Germany from the regular US website. it didn't cost any more than shipping it to someplace in the US, so that seemed like a good omen. but it has been three weeks so far and it hasn't arrived yet. if it's just a matter of time I will recommend that people in Europe order from the US website. but if the book never arrives we will try to set up a special European distribution method.
