Christmas spirit -- early this year

So here it is Labor Day, but my thoughts are a couple of holidays ahead.

Faithful readers of this blog know that I do Christmas ornaments each year for friends and family, always personalized with names or initials and the date.  Since I've been doing this for decades, it gets harder and harder to think of a new approach, and a point of pride to come up with something sort of new.   On my recent road trip, with lots of time to talk about everything under the sun, I was musing about what I was going to make this year, and was guilted by my friend into making the ornaments out of fabric rather than some of the other materials I have experimented with in recent years.

I won't show you what I'm making, of course, but I will show you the half-yard of fabric that came in the mail last week.  You will note the digits 1 and 3 and probably surmise that I'll use it for the dates.

This will definitely be the earliest I've ever finished my ornaments.  I'm feeling so smug!

As I did last year, I'm offering to make an ornament for one of my faithful readers to say thanks for following.  Leave a post before this coming Friday and tell me why you should be the lucky one!  Maybe it will put you in a Christmas mood and take your mind off the HOT weather for a minute or two.

  1. By the time Christmas arrives here in New Zealand it will be hot, so a " bespoke in the summer" ornament would be just the ticket :-)

  2. Maybe a new ornament would actually inspire me to do a little Christmas decorating this year.

  4. I think I might be your reader that lives closest to the North Pole! That's a pretty good reason. Thank you Kathy for continuing to inspire me both in thought and art.

  5. Well Kathy... Christmas is not so much fun for this 15 yr. Sales Manager in a large retail department store - though I LOVE my customers and THEY are the ones that make the season for me, a new ornament on the very small tree(who has time to decorate trees when Christmas shopping season is in full swing)at my house would certainly brighten the season. You always brighten my day and week with this blog!Playing with skinny seam inserts today on my day off! Thanks for the tutorial..

  8. Because I love your blog--so much food for thought with a few smiles thrown in--and because, given that I am in a year of transition as my husband and I move to a new home, it is highly unlikely that I will make Christmas ornaments this year, much as I would love to.
